the town summerfield takes place in the modern day in and around the small town of summerfield, located in the southeastern united states. it was established in the early 1800s as a trading post in the (drained) wetlands along the forked deer river, growing in accordance to the prosperity of the farms surrounding it. the emergence of other towns later in the century better situated to perform the same purpose, while not outright killing summerfield, limited any further growth and kept it small. it has survived into the modern day by servicing the needs of the farms nearby and by acting as a pit stop for people traveling to larger cities. corn, cotton, and soybeans are by far the most popular crops in the area, but there are a handful of beef cattle farms and a single dairy in operation. the population tends to hover around three thousand, five hundred people.

the weather springs tend to be warm and humid, hovering between sixty and seventy degrees Fahrenheit, with flooding occurring more often than not, while summers are just plain hot, easily going into the eighties and nineties, with a moderate amount of rain fall. autumn tends to be wet and cool, with sixty degrees Fahrenheit being the average high. like autumn, winter tends to be wet, with daily highs not even reaching forty degrees more often than not. true snowstorms are rare; you're more likely to see a dusting of snow here and there. when snow does accumulate, it's never more than a foot or two deep, though it's usually layered over at least an inch of solid ice. as a result of this warm climate, ticks and mosquitos abound, meaning canines from all walks of life tend to suffer from these parasites and the diseases they carry.

the environment summerfield is situated in a somewhat hilly, forested area located along the forked deer river. flatter areas can and do flood due to the relatively heavy rainfall, and it only gets worse the closer to the river you are.
please note that the lists of animals and plants are under construction, as they're being researched and added when I have free time.
animals:
- cougars (extremely rare; if seen, they are traveling east or further south to find open territory) - white-tailed deer - wild hogs (extremely uncommon; heavily hunted by humans due to destructive & dangerous nature) - virginia opossum - nine-banded armadillo - eastern cottontail - woodchuck - squirrel (eastern fox, gray, southern flying) - beaver (uncommon) - common muskrat - nutria - raccoon - otter - weasel - mink - striped skunk - bobcat (rare; heavily hunted by humans due to perceived threats to pets and to prevent their preying on turkey and deer) - shrews - moles - chipmunks - mice & rats - voles - bats - great blue heron
